LOUISVILLE, KY — A two-day manhunt for the person who allegedly shot a downstate police officer ended Saturday night after the wanted man was shot and killed by an officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department across the Indiana state line.

An Indiana Blue Alert was issued statewide early Friday for 33-year-old Austin Schepers after he shot Orange County Deputy Sheriff Zac Andry multiple times, including in the head. Schepers then fled the scene.

Andry was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition, ISP said Saturday.

ISP, along with officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department, descended upon a residence in the 3700 block of Wheeler Avenue in Louisville where they believed Schepers may have been hiding. While there, police found the wanted man and the confrontation resulted in an officer fatally shooting him.

An ISP spokesperson confirmed to the Times that a Louisville officer shot Schepers, not an ISP trooper.

Schepers had reportedly been seen Friday night on the Indiana side of the Ohio River in the New Albany area, ISP said. Police had located his abandoned vehicle that morning.

A female passenger who had been in Schepers' car was found near Orangeville at approximately 8 a.m. Friday and was taken into custody.

Police had warned the public that Schepers was considered armed and dangerous.

ISP did not explain the nature of the confrontation or what led them to the Louisville residence but said Louisville metro police would provide additional details of the involvement of their officers during the encounter.

Louisville metro police confirmed the officer-involved shooting on social media but had not released a statement with any further details as of 9 p.m. Saturday.
